When do I start my tomato garden in southeast Michigan?

This is my first garden and I want to produce good crops. I also have watermelon, jalepeno, and cucumber. I know I should start them inside, but when, and when do I move them out.

If you're starting tomatoes from seed, you should plant them indoors now, and then move them outside in late May or early June. If you are going to buy small plants, you can put them into your garden in mid-late May. I had a garden in Detroit last year and the tomatoes were fabulous! Make sure you give them plenty of water and put them in a place where they get sun for at least 4 hours/day.

Since you have the other crops, too, the most important thing to do is to make sure you have enough space in between plants. Tomatoes especially look small when they're starting, but they can grow really big and you'll have a jungle before you know it.

Good luck!
Reply:Start tomatoes and peppers from plants and cuc's and melons from seed. Wait until after the last frost. One year the weather got really nice and I got anxious and planted and we had a frost and I ended up having to replant the whole garden.
Reply:If you do decide to put them out before your neighbors so that you can show off your gorgeous tomatoes ahead of them, get a product called "Wall of Water". It keeps the plants safe if you have a freeze.
Reply:After the last frost or everything may die. good luck !
Reply:The time is now to start them from seed indoors. I live in Chatham, Ontario which is not too far away from you. My girlfriend is an avid gardener and she started the seeds yesterday. I trust her judgement on this and other things.
