How can I grow ivy quickly to cover my garden floor?

Our garden is not so big (40 sq. meters). Most ivy plants that I see in Garden Shops are quite small. But they tell me the individual plants will grow fast. Is there a specific type of ivy that I should purchase?

How can I grow ivy quickly to cover my garden floor?
This is a good question. I faved it so I could keep updated on this one. Anyone know if there is a trick to cutting it and placing it in baskets so you can have more then one plant?

(is it ok I ask that here? Sorry if it isn't)
Reply:All varieties of hedra helix grow prity quickly and to be honest can soon become a manace if let grow up walls .

The shoots will quickly root them selfs down and before you know it you will have a jungle in your garden
Reply:the typical ivy, dark or light, both grow at the same pace which is the fastest of any plants i have ever seen, lol. so just buy a few of any type that you like and it will definitely grow quickly. just give it a little time, they are easy maintenance too, they can withstand a lot of conditions.
Reply:You may want to consider a less vigorous and domineering ground cover. A few that are very sturdy and reliable yet still controllable include: Ajuga, Creeping Phlox, Lamium and Lamiastrum, Dianthus, Sedum and Vinca. All of these are attractive and hardy but will not completely overrun your garden, turning into something which you dread and hate.

I know that isn't what you asked and I'm sorry, but it seemed unkind not to mention it when the red flags were waving so briskly.
Reply:There is an old saying about ivy.

The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps and the third year it leaps.

I think you will find that is close to the truth. It needs to develop a good root system first.
Reply:You might want to try vinca major, a nonclimbing vine, instead.
Reply:Boston ivy and English ivy both grow fast.
