What exactly is an English garden and would the plants grow in Florida?

I assume it is something they grow regularly in England but what makes it different from any other garden?

The previous answer is dead on regarding the planting of the English garden. English gardens pack their plants in tightly, so much that you cannot see the ground.

Some of those plants will work in FL, but you definitely don't want to water the plants everyday (it rains like clockwork in Florida every afternoon in the summer, plus your neighborhood may have water restrictions).

Another reason why an English style garden may not work well in FL is because of the fact that the plants are planted so tightly together.. this would serve as a great place for diseases and insects to live. Providing good air flow for plants to reduce fungi is a must, something the English style garden does not permit.
Reply:An English Garden is anything you want it to. a mix of colors, shapes sizes %26amp; textures. wildflowers, cutting flowers, hurbs and because they are usually just outside the kitchen door, with a few small veggies mixed in like green onion, or carrott.

I think the doc has had his head it the books too long. everything you say sounds like a speech.

You go ahead %26amp; plant your English garden in Fla, %26amp; pay no mind to the doc.
Reply:I'm from the UK originally so I'll try to answer this. I'm assuming you're talking about a traditional English cottage garden.

The flowers used are usually roses, lavender, lobelia, honeysuckle, poppies, and any kind of wildflowers you like. We usually use clematis and climbing roses, and hydrangeas a lot as well. What makes this kind of garden special is that plants are planted in 'drifts" - lots of planting together, with maybe the use of little paths in between. The general idea is to make the garden look as natural as possible. You can mix in any herbs or flowers you like. I think it would grow well in Florida, as long as it gets plenty of water in the summer. Hope this helps!
