How to keep wild animals out of my garden?

I started a medium size garden. I do not have the money right now to put a fence up around it. We have deer, rabbits and coons. What are some other methods that work for keeping them OUT of it? I don't want to try the human hair thing. I've heard it doesn't work. No urine ideas either.

I've heard of a bar of soap on a stick. Or sticks with white sheets placed every 2-3 feet or so.

What do you think? What works?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?!!!

Thank you!

For their garden, my grandparents would always take those cheap tin-foil pie plate pans you buy at the grocery. They would then put a stake through the ground, and attach the pie pan to the stake (hanging in the air) by some twine. Then as the breeze moves, the pans move around a little. Since they are reflective, they shine light around, and when they move, they bang against the stake, making noise to scare off the birds and animals. Did it work all the time? No. But it was one of the most effective measures that they tried.
Reply:Ok, I know you don't like the human scent options, but they have some effect on some animals, so consider adding them to the mix.

Crushed mothballs deter some critters.

Shiny moving objects, like pinwheels, may help a little during the day. By night, something that imitates the look of a bonfire can provide a bit of a deterrent.

Motion detector driven sprinklers can do a dramatically good job too. Some motion detector triggered sounds can help as well.

I used to have a flock of birds roosting on my porch. I initially sought a rubber snake to wrap around the railing, but settled for a plastic owl with brilliant glass eyes. It really did the trick.

Good luck!
Reply:I would suggest blood meal, its a source of nitrogen that works for keeping rabbit and deer out of you garden, but it won't work for the raccoons because they aren't vegetarians. Do not put it directly on your plants because it will burn them. Good luck!!!
Reply:We purchased a water sprayer system that is comparable to a motion detecter when an animal comes in range it receives a spray of water. It seems to work just remember to turn it off when you are out.
Reply:Some say Irish spring soap works.
