How do I stop cats messing in my garden?

How do I stop my neighbours cat doing its mess in my garden, I have a 20 month old baby who goes out there. I am wooried incase she picks some up I miss. I do go round before the kids go out there and check but I cant risk missing any.

How do I stop cats messing in my garden?
I would start with something mild, like a box of used tennis balls (ask at your local university). If that doesn't work, I'd graduate to one of those pistols that shoots round plastic balls at a fair velocity. If that isn't effective, try a Super Soaker filled with a mixture of half ammonia / half water. From there, it's a BB gun. Then a pellet gun. If you still have the problem, you'll have to get serious. Bird shot from a 12 guage shotgun will work, but by this time you'll be frustrated enough that you'll be considering real countermeasures. Professional pyrotechnics are available that will allow you arrange a field of explosive surprises for the little beasts. You might need a license for this, though.

You could also try a number of these options on your neighbor.
Reply:I'm sure you'll get in trouble with the law if you try firearms or pyrotechnics. Report It

Reply:FENCE YOUR GARDEN WITH BROKEN GLASS PIECES ON TOP.
Reply:BUy a dog. . . and have him tied or housed near the garden.
Reply:If you put some flowers with spikes on them this will stop the cats doing this as they hate these kind of this it has worked for us and my sister who has a baby and a neighbour that has a cat the cat doesn't go in there garden anymore
Reply:Shoot them!
Reply:Orange or lemon peal. You can also try pepper but you need to reapply after it rains.
Reply:1 get a more vicious dog (not a good idea with a baby though)

2 put sharp stuff all round your fence (not recommended as you will most likely get asked to take it down by the police because the burglars will complain) however you can get strips of plastic spikes which are legal and cats might not like.

3 give the cats such a bad experience in your garden that they will never want to go anywhere near it, i.e. catch them in a cage trap device and then repeatedly pour buckets of water over them. (this is the most effective and humane way, just make sure nobody sees you doing it)
Reply:Lead works great.
Reply:Buy a dog.
Reply:you can't , don't worry about it
Reply:Get a dog as your pet.
Reply:fill some see through plastic pop bottles with water and lie them round the garden that,ll do the trick.
Reply:fill empty coke bottles(1 or 2 litres) with water peel off the lables and lay them in the gardens.or use pepper.but thats not good if bub plays in it.
Reply:Put down pepper, cats dont like it, or get a dog
Reply:Plant loads of lemon grass and lemon verbana.

Cats hate it.

AND throw sharpened coins at the little furry mess making bastards.
Reply:Get a cat as they will put down their scent in the garden and the other cat will stay away. not only that you cat won't sh!t in your garden it will use your neighbours, so you can get your own back!!
Reply:Ignore the cruel answers, there are plants that you can buy , cats do not like the smell, place them in pots around the garden
Reply:cats dig a hole and then cover up their toilet - if you are finding it lying on the grass it is more likely to be your dog or a neighbours dog. Cat repellents dont work on big areas, best to use water gun .
Reply:Get a really powerful water gun and sit in wait until you see one coming into your garden.

Then blast em!

Or buy a dog!

Both work...
Reply:tell your neighbors to keep their cat inside, you might be able to find something at a lawn and garden store or a pet store to keep cats away or try like lemon peals or something cats don't like citrus.
Reply:try squirting water at it with your hosepipe when you see it in your garden.
Reply:aholmes gave the answer. Lemon and vinegar is great to deter the cats away.
Reply:Theres very little you can do about this, other than get a cat; your cat will then do what is necessarry in your neighbours garden, and meanwhile, other cats will stay out of yours, as cats have their territories.
Reply:put vinegar in corners and throw lavender oil on your neighbers side.cat love lavender sent.maybe the cat wil stay there and do his thing over there.
Reply:use a lemon or vinger, cats hates the smell of them.
Reply:Cats wont usually go in the garden whilke your out there as most are scared of people they dont know.

If the do, just shout at them or squirt water at them and they`ll soon go.

I always have to check my garden first too as i also have a baby.

I`m afraid you cant do much about that unless you have a conservatory or gazebo that can close up at night.
Reply:Air rifle

Then nail their little corpses to your fence

If cats had scales they would extinct by now

Reply:the cats are only using your garden as a toilet because you do not own a cat an therefore your garden is like an open space waiting to be claimed. so, the cats will come and leave their mark unfortunately. maybe if you lightly squirt them with water whenever you see them in your garden, but please do not use alot or any excessive force on them as they will not thank you for it and the will defiantly not stop coming to your garden.
Reply:i have a cat, but since we had our garden done with just grass and slate chippings around the border, we wont mess in our garden (only about 4 times we have noticed in the past 4 months or so).
