How do you get rid of weeds in garden without using harsh chemicals bad for animals?
The Mother Earth News is a fantabulous source of information for organic gardening. Here's a link to the main site, http://www.motherearthnews.com/, for more information on any subject re: organics, look for the "search the archives" box, and type away!

And one for specifically keeping a weed-free garden, naturally: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic_G...

Reply:Only three ways I'm aware of. Get weeder geese (if you can have them in your area.) Remove them by hand. Mulch, mulch, mulch.
Reply:you should never use weed killer, that is a very bad chemical.the rain or irrigation washes it into the ground ,and eventually it ends up in the subteranean waters, that some one else may be pumping to drink from.

Sometimes there just is not an easy or lazy way out of doing something correctly and the uggly truth about weeding is that you best do it by hand,i have always done it that way

you use a pointed stick or an icepick or a small garden fork, and you pull out the weeds.leave them where they fall and the organic material covers the now broken ground to stop it from drying out

but this is very theraputic work ,or you hire some kids and you will probable spend the same as the weed killer costs, which is very expensive

,

and you can sleep soundly knowing that you have been environmentally correct

Reply:There are natural weed control you can find at health food store. Also, weed by hand.
Reply:Mulch your garden heavily. Not only will this lead to much less weeding, but the weeding is much easier, as the roots will pull more easily from the mulch than from soil. Also, mulch will help retain ground moisture, from which your garden will benefit greatly. It won't solve your problem immediately, but it's a great way to prevent having to spend so much time weeding, and will ease your mind with regard to having to use chemicals .
Reply:use your grass clippings to make a mulch...keep layers 4-5 inches deep this will kill the weeds as they can not get any sunshine..good luck.
Reply:No easy answer other than to dig them up manually I'm afraid.
Reply:Pull them diligently roots and all
Reply:cover with heavy plastic and mulch over the plastic. If you want to weed between plants already there - on your hands and knees. Mulch heavily and plant densly to keep the sun off the weeds (they're never really gone). Weed heavily in the srping until your plants can get established and the reast of the season should be easier.

good luck.
Reply:platic trashbags laid around the plants and covered with mulch will slow weeds down,,they are tough plants, try to pick all remaining by the roots if u can.
Reply:hi make sure that when you weed your your gardenn that you make sure you get the roots as well as the leaves and before the roots get deep in the ground. if any part of the roots is left in the ground the weed will quickly germinate again. hope this helps.
