Where is the best place in a garden to put a bird nesting box?

I have just brought a nesting box, but am struggling to think of a place to put it. We have several bird feeders in our lilac tree, so I'm not sure if it is wise to put it anywhere near those as it might put birds off nesting altogether.

The garden is about half the size of a tennis court.

Sparrows, Blackbirds, Wrens, Robins, Coaltits and Bluetits visit the garden often to feed.

The tree would be the best place or if you have a quiet corner where the box could be attached to a wall , out of the way of cats of course.
Reply:you should put it high up on a sturdy branch on a tree-- try to make sure that the wind doesnt hit it-- check which way the wind usually goes and opposite that!
Reply:Facing east, sheltered about 10` off the ground in a quiet spot that can`t be reached by cats. I`ve got 3 in my garden but havn`t had any nest, although I do get lots of fledglings at the feeders. My mum however gets bluetits in her letter box (it`s on a pole in her front garden) every year. She has to put a notice on it for the postman then he leaves the post in a lidded bucket.
Reply:we have ours on the side of the shed but one of our cats has just worked out that if he goes on the shed roof and sits on the edge he can put his paw in the box and torment the birds!!
Reply:If you have a window put it near it so you could see it.
Reply:next to a cat flap
Reply:Different species require different boxes and different requirements for placing the box. Check out this website it should help a bit.

Find out what bird the nest box was built to house, if it a decorative box that looks more like a nick nack then a plain wood box chanced are that it will not attract anything. If you bought it from a wild bird store or a pet shop find out what species the box was manufactured for. You can also do a google search for specifications on species.
Reply:put it UP height in a Tree or on the side side of your house as cats and other animals cnat reach it then and the birds will be safe
Reply:In next doors garden
Reply:Put it in any other trees you might have, or on a fence. And if you put it where you could have a view of it from inside your house, that would be even better.
Reply:Away from the feeders, but near or in a tree.

.
Reply:Up in a tree.
