a farmer decides to enclose a rectangular garden, using the side of a barn as one side of the rectangle. what is the maximum area that the farmer can enclose with 100ft of fence? what should the dimensions of the garden be to give this area?

he can go out 25 feet and across 50 feet, using the barn as the other 50 foot side, provided the barn is that big. How big is the side of the barn???
Reply:depends on what the measurements of the side of the barn are.
Reply:This homework problem has been around for ages. I had it when I was in school, my kids had it when they were in fifth grade, and in a couple of years, my grandkids are going to get it. I would not be surprised if my grandfather had it in the 19th century.

The max area is a rectangle twice as wide as it is deep. This assumes the barn side is half as long as the fencing.
