Expanding garden-what do I need to do to get rid of exsisting grass?

I am going to expand my garden this year and need to know what I need to do to the area that has grass.

Expanding garden-what do I need to do to get rid of exsisting grass?
I would recommend that you spray it off with roundup or an equivalent generic. If the soil is friable enough you can even plant straight on top ,once the grasses have completely dried up,as not disturbing the soil again will help prevent further germination of weeds .
Reply:strip the sod. there is always some other spots in the yard where it can be used. Either bare spots or low spots. the rototil with peat moss and sand. In the fall, stir in some leaves from around the yards trees. they'll compost over the winter.
Reply:take a shovel and turn the sod over...when dried out hit it with the roto-tiller...no need to get rid of the grass...
Reply:Cover it with black plastic and weight it down for a couple of months it will the grass back then rototill.
Reply:Rent a sod stripping machine, a lot quicker
Reply:You can use mulch which will keep the soil moist and feed the soil while it smothers the grass and weeds. When you are ready to plant, part the mulch and slightly loosen the soil underneath with a pitchfork. This makes a great seed bed for almost anything. The mulch should be grass based, and about 8" to a foot deep to start.
