How can I get my garden to grow?

I live in Illinois and for several years have tried to plant a garden of different vegetables in my backyard and have had no success. I do not know what I am doing wrong. The place where I have decided to plant the garden gets a lot of sun light during the day plus it does get shade. I have used many different fertilizers to get to grow but nothing seems to work. I want to grow cucumbers and pumpkins this summer. What do I need to do to get my garden to grow?

Cucumbers like full sunlight. Check out the next link for cucumber information. Male blossoms are supposed to drop females shouldn't drop. If they do the web site tells you how to fertilize them manually.

Pumpkins will suffer if there isn't enough water. They sometimes need to be manually fertilized as well.
Reply:I don't know what your soil is like in Illinois ; if it is rather heavy , you may need to lighten it , digging in some straw , real animal manure or sand . If you are already using a variety of fertilizers , discuss with your local supplier , garden shop , nurseries , which is the best .

To grow plants like cucumbers , pumpkins , melons , tomatoes , you need a lot of water , applied early morning and evening , after sundown . Don't weed your garden , just tread the weeds down on the ground . I was taught this by a show gardener ; the weeds do not take sufficient nutrients out of the soil , but pressed down , keep the moisture in .
Reply:you need to check the quality of the soil it may be to acidic or too much nitrogen buy a soil testing kit from your local garden center and try again
Reply:I would guess, either more sunlight or more water.
